Does Your Wi-Fi Connection Have a Data Cap? Use Less Data on Your Phone

Looking to use less data on your Wi-Fi connection? There’s an easy solution for both iPhone and Android owners. Whether the Wi-Fi connection has a data cap, or you’re looking to limit the stress on the network, there’s a simple way to lessen the amount of data your smartphone is using with just a few taps.

If you have an iPhone, open Settings, then tap “Wi-Fi.” Tap the (i) next to the Wi-Fi network you’re connected to, then tap the toggle next to “Low Data Mode.”

On Android, open Settings, then tap “Network & Internet.” Tap “Wi-Fi,” then tap the settings gear next to the network you’re connected to. Tap “Advanced,” then “Network Usage,” then switch to “Treat as metered.”

This setting is similar to iOS’ Low Data Mode — both settings reduce the amount of data your iPhone uses on that Wi-Fi connection. You’ll still be able to send and receive email, stream video, and most anything else you’d normally do on your phone, but just at a slower pace and, in the case of video, lower quality.
