Video calls these days are all about the links. You get the link to join a Zoom, Teams, or Google call, and you’re in! However, often, these calls are meant to be just for the people approved. Be careful not to share these links (or the meeting passcode) with just anyone!
Sharing links outside of the approved network opens the door to potential bad actors going after your video call. These actions can be as innocuous as distracting everyone in the meeting, or sitting in in an attempt to steal sensitive information. You don’t know the person’s intention until it’s too late.
If you’re asked to share the video call link, make sure you can verify the identity of the asker. If they are supposed to be in the meeting, they likely have the call link already. If not, it’s likely safer to have them go through the organizer of the meeting, who knows for sure who is and who is not invited to the call.
Luckily, there are other tools in place to prevent against this type of attack; you can utilize the waiting room to make sure no one enters without permission, and you can lock meetings to disallow any new participants. Still, it’s helpful to nip the problem in the bud; don’t share the link!
