The working world relies on computers to communicate. Where would we be this past year without Microsoft Teams or Zoom? But unless you’re taking the proper precautions, your laptop might just be a gateway into your private life.
That camera sitting at the top of your display isn’t just under your control. While we like to think it doesn’t turn on unless we want it to, it’s public knowledge at this point that outside forces can sneakily activate both your computer’s camera and microphone undetected.
While it can be difficult to muffle the microphone, there’s an easy solution for your camera — cover it up! When not in use, find a way to block the camera from view, then test your handiwork. If you aren’t able to see yourself on a video feed, neither will any bad actors.
Still need convincing? Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and former FBI Director James Comey both cover their personal webcams. That’s good enough for me.
As for how to cover your webcam, that’s entirely up to you. A simple sticky note actually gets the job done quite well, albeit without looking the nicest. If you’re willing to invest a small amount of cash into your privacy, think about picking up a webcam cover like this one. They stealthily attach to your laptop, and feature a sliding cover to show or hide the webcam.
Just slide the cover over when taking a video call, then slide it back when you’re done. Who said privacy couldn’t be convenient?
