It’s Not Just Good Advice — You Really Shouldn’t Use the Same Password Twice

Imagine if every lock in your life was exactly the same. The lock to your house was the same as the lock to your car, which was the same as the lock to your mailbox, which was the same as the lock to the money in your bank (for this hypothetical example).

That doesn’t sound very secure, does it? So why are you making all of your digital locks the same?

It’s a perfect analogy. Why? Because if someone figures out the password to one of your accounts, there’s nothing stopping them from trying it out on any other accounts they can think of.

Don’t get me started on the quality of your password. We’ll save that discussion for another time.

But keeping track of multiple passwords is hard, right? Who can remember them all? You’ll just end up having to reset your password every time you try to check your bank balance. It’s not like the real world where every password is a key, and you can just keep them on a keyring …

Except, that’s exactly what it’s like. For the most convenient and secure password keeping, you need a digital keyring. And boy, are there options.

LastPass, Dashlane, 1Password, and Keeper are just a handful of the services out there that offer you what I’m talking about — they securely store all of your passwords for you, and let you access those passwords whenever you need them.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, here’s a tip — just go with LastPass. Unlike some services out there, LastPass offers a free option without too many sacrifices, allowing you to store and access your passwords on your iPhone, Android, Mac, or PC.
