The hacker gang REvil has claimed responsibility for a massive Fourth of July weekend cyberattack. The attack occurred on Friday, June 2, at 2 p.m. EDT, and targeted Kaseya software, a popular suite of IT and business programs and services.
REvil targeted individual computers in this attack, demanding $45,000 to unlock each device, or $70 million to unlock all at once. The group asked for these demands in the form of bitcoin.
MSPs, like MERIT Solutions, quickly identified the attack, and use programs — like Huntress and Webroot — that promptly included patches to address the issue. MERIT tested these patches before deploying them on their clients’ networks.
However, MERIT in particular clarifies that it’s important to note that there is no evidence that any of its clients were affected by the Kaseya cyberattack.
