We’ve seen business after business targeted for cyberattack and ransomware since the end of 2020. But now, it seems the attackers have turned their eyes on a bigger prize: the U.S. State Department.
The news come via a Fox News report released on Sunday; the report does not specify the full extent of the breach, or when the breach was officially discovered. The report cites an anonymous source, which says that the Department of Defense’s Cyber Command notified of a “possibly serious breach.”
Fox confirmed that the breach did not affect the evacuation mission in Kabul. The State Department did not confirm or deny the attack in a statement to Fox:
“The Department takes seriously its responsibility to safeguard its information and continuously takes steps to ensure information is protected,” a department spokesperson said. “For security reasons, we are not in a position to discuss the nature or scope of any alleged cybersecurity incidents at this time.”
