If you’re looking to upgrade your Windows 7 machine to something still supported by Microsoft, you really only have two options — Windows 10, or Windows 8.1. We’re here to recommend you don’t choose the latter. Here’s why.
It’s true, Microsoft still supports Windows 8.1. You could install and upgrade to that software version and be safe in the knowledge that Microsoft will continue sending security updates to your computer. But for how long?
While Microsoft hasn’t issued a final date for Windows 8.1 support yet, it will come eventually. Windows 10, on the other hand, is Microsoft’s latest and greatest OS. Investing in that software comes with the guarantee that you will be supported long from now. Even once Microsoft inevitably unveils its next big OS (whenever that may be), precedent shows that Windows 10 support will last at least two to three years after that.
The same simply can’t be said for 8.1. Taking the time to upgrade your software and possibly your hardware to Windows 10 now is a headache you can avoid down the line when Microsoft cuts ties with 8.1.
